The Mavericks progressed to the second round of the cup after extra time in a thrilling encounter at Kellingley Welfare. The hosts took an early lead after a cross come shot found the top corner of the net. In a competitive end to end game the Mavericks equalised when Matty Cunliffe beat the keeper from the edge of the box after latching on to Gaz Newitts through ball.Both teams had several chances before Kellingley added a second just before half time . Kellingley went 3-1 up early in the second period .This spurred the Mavericks on Matty Cunliffe raced clear to net his second of the game and completed his hat trick with a diving header from Kevin Drydens near post cross to take the game into extra time.In the opening minutes of extra time theMavericks where caught napping at a free kick allowing Kellingley to take the lead for the third time, but again the Mavericks showed great spirit Callum Hewitt turning in Cunliffes header to level the score again and with the last kick of the first period of extra time Matty Elvin slotted home a penalty after Man of the Match Matty Cunliffe was tripped in the box.The second period of extra time saw both Callun Pettinger and Kellingleys keeper make great saves before the Mavericks made the game safe withCallum Hewitt volleying home Cunliffes cross to give the Mavericks a well deserved 6-4 victory. The Mavericks started the season away at Yorkshire Amateurs and had the better of the early exchanges with Callum Hewitt going close to opening the scoring twice in the first 10 minutes. The hosts then took control of the game with 2 goals from the next 20 minutes of play, the Mavericks fought there way back into the game close to half time with Matty Cunnliffe going close before Yorkshire Amateurs extended there lead to 3 in the dying minutes of the first half . Yorkshire Amateurs started thesecond half the same way as they finished the first with a goal within 2 minutes of the resumption of play and the writing seemed to be on the wall . The Mavericks dug deep and showed some great character Ben Vodden lifted the ball over the keeper from aNathan Wright free kick . Man of the Match Matty Cunliffe opened his account for the Mavericks with a great run and dipping shot. The Mavericks can take great pride from there second half performance against Yorkshire Amateurs who where denied there thirdconsecutive premiere division title by only 1 point last season.
