07/05/2009 1 - 3 Loss To Durkar Devils
As the sun set on another football season The Mavericks travelled to the league champions, The Durkar Devils, for their final match of the year.

Hoping to come away with something from the game in order to keep hold of their fifth place in the league, The Mavericks almost went a goal down in the opening seconds as a optimistic shot from the kick-off took a bounce and hit the bar. Apart from this scare The Mavericks impressed well in the opening spell holding off a well organised Durkar attacking line and even creating a couple of chances themselves. The deadlock, however, was broken midway through the first half when a high ball could only be parried away by The Mavericks keeper and fell nicely for the Durkar forward to pass the ball into the backof the net. With the wind and the slope of the pitch behind them Durkar pressed for more goals and their second came in similar fashion to their first, a high bouncing ball in The Mavericks penalty box with the Durkar forward getting to the ball first and finishing nicely..

Now with the wind and slope advantage in the second half, The Mavericks began to pressure the home goal and were unlucky not to get a goal back when defender Matthew Barraclough shot from outside the box only to see his dipping ball just clear the top of the bar. Defending well The Devils broke on the counter attack and put the game to bed with a slick well worked move making the score 3-0. The Mavericks gained a slim slither of hope when they pulled one back as a Joe Donaldthrough ball found Thomas Hobson running in the box and finishing well for his sixth goal of the season. The final whistle blew on the game, and The Mavericks season, with a 3-1 loss to the league champions..

Well done to all the boys for a longseason where they battled well and tried hard. Thanks too, to Anthony and Ian for all their hard work and effort during the year, well done.

29/04/2009 3 - 3 Draw With Wakefield Jets
The Mapplewell Maverick`s under 10`s travelled to league leaders The Wakefield Jets for their penultimate league game of the season. Looking to make amends for their largest league defeat of the year from their previous meeting.

The Mavericks started well holding off a very well organised Jets team. The opening spell was a tactical battle with no real chances going either way, however the deadlock was broken after 10 minutes with The Mavericks taking the lead. A corner swung in by Lee Jordan wasmet by Keagan who headed powerfully into the net. Stung by this the Jets streamed forward searching for the equaliser only to be met by the defensive brick wall of keeper Matthew Cox, who made save after save to keep his team in the lead. Indeed it was Cox who contributed to the Mavericks second when his goal kick was headed on by midfielder Josh Neil and was picked up by Keagan to unleash a screamer past The Jets keeper to make it 2-0 to the away team. The game was now opening up into a great attackingbattle with chances going begging at both ends, but it was again The Mavericks who seemed to have the rub of the green as they extended their lead just before the break. A Harry Andrews long throw into the box was again met by Keagan to post his hat trickwith his second headed goal of the game. Indeed The Mavericks could have extended their lead as a 25 yard Josh Neil shot ricocheted off the post and out to safety.

The Jets came out for the second half in determined mood and looking for goals to keep their title hopes alive. An early strike which was well saved by Matthew Cox was the first of a barrage of attacks by the home team. Unfortunately after 5 minutes of the second half the inevitable occurred when The Jets pulled one back with good work by their forward line. A well taken 20 yard free kick lead to their second goal midway through the second half and this made for a thrilling finale with The Jets looking for an equaliser and The Mavericks looking to hold onto their lead. Unfortunately

19/04/2009 2 - 1 Win Against Kippax Welfare
The final home game of the season saw the Mapplewell Mavericks under 9`s welcome Kippax Welfare to Mapplewell Park. A warm spring-like day gave perfect footballing conditions and it was the Mavericks Yellow team kicking off first, who found the conditionsto their liking with some lovely interchange play between Harry Andrews, Lee Jordan, Josh Neil and Kieran Barraclough.Indeed it was the pairing of Andrews and Barraclough who worked well to provide the Mavericks opening goal. Harry Andrews found Kieran Barraclough clear in the box who, after some magical footwork, made space to score with his left foot notching up his first goal of the season. Mapplewell continued to play some beautiful football at times, yet couldn`t find the net to press home their advantage, unfortunately a story of the season so far. On the rare attack by Kippax, any pressure was dealt with well with the ever reliable and resolute defending by Harry Lockwood, Matthew Barraclough and keeper Matthew Cox. Mapplewell nearly made it 2-0 with a fine run by Josh Neil leading to a good ball to Harry Andrews who shot just wide.

The second half saw Kippax awaken and began to put pressure on the Mavericks goal. A brace of good saves by Matthew Cox kept the home side ahead, but unfortunately he couldn`t do anything about the shot which levelled the scores, with the Kippax forward finding the top corner with a great strike. The noise level off the home support increased as the Mavericks went in search of the winning goal. This continued pressure paid off with only minutes remaining as a break saw Harry Andrews steam down the pitch to supply an inch perfect ball to Lee Jordan who hit it first time with his favoured left foot into the corner of the goal to make the final score 2-1 to the Mavericks.

Man of the match was Kieran Barraclough for his none stop running and the cool way in which he took his goal.

05/04/2009 0 - 3 Loss To Ossett Albion
They say football is a game of two halves and this was proven beyond doubt when the under 9`s visited Ossett.

With a severely sloping pitch more suited to mountain goats and Sir Edmund Hilary rather than football, it was clear that whoever was shooting downhill had the advantage and those playing uphill needed crampons, guide-ropes and oxygen instead of football boots. Adding to the fun was an overnight water leak which produced a 5 metre wide bog running the diagonal across the pitch.

Ossett kicked off shooting down the 'mountain' and it was soon clear that local knowledge came into play with ball after ball being punted into the Mavericks penalty box, and it was off one of these that the first goal came. With parts of the penalty areahard and dry but with the rest being sodden, judging the bounce of the ball was going to be a lottery and so it proved as a hopeful ball plugged in the mud and in the ensuing melay that followed the ball was poked in the back of the net by the home side.Ossett didn`t have it all their own way in the first half though, a good break away by the Mavericks ended with Lee Jordan conquering the summit of Ossett`s penalty box only to be thwarted by a good save off the keeper. Ossett`s second came in much the same manner as their first, with a ball into the box leaving the keeper unsighted as Ossett made it 2-0.

Hoping to redress the balance in the second half the yellow`s kicked off looking to put pressure on the Ossett goal with some long range efforts, and these nearly paid dividends, however a string of good saves by the home keeper kept the Mavericks forwards at bay. The best chance of the second half came as Lee Jordan swung in a corner only for a tremendous header off Harry Andrews to hit the bar. This seemed to sum up the luck that the Mavericks were having, and this was compounded by the fact that Ossett snatched a late goal to make it 3-0.

A very poor pitch make it extremely difficult for any sort of fluid football to be played but

29/03/2009 1 - 1 Draw With Nostell Miners
The Mavericks travelled to a calm and sunny Nostell Miners ground and came away with a hard earned 1-1 draw.

After a fairly even initial period the Mavericks began to drive forwards as a succession of corners rained into the opposition goalmouth, however somehow the yellows failed to capitalise as Nostell cleared their lines time and again. Nostell then began to hit back on the break, but Harry Lockwood in particular was having none of it as he made a number of crucial interceptions to deny the opposition an opening. The Mavericks first clear cut chance fell to Josh Neil as he struck a superb right foot drive which the keeper brilliantly pushed onto the post. Kieran Barraclough then came on to bolster the attack but soon found himself working hard in defence alongside Matthew Barraclough. Finally the opener came when Harry Andrews picked up a loose ball on the right and unleashed an unstoppable pile driver into the top corner giving the keeper no chance. The teams went in at half time withthe Mavericks up 1-0.

In the second half Nostell applied some early pressure but again the Mavericks looked the more dangerous when a Harry Andrews corner was headed into the side netting by Lee Jordan. James Priestly and Thomas Hobson also wentclose but it was Nostell who suddenly broke free and equalised with a forceful shot which keeper Matthew Cox brilliantly got a hand to but couldn`t prevent from crossing the line. The Mavericks searched hard for a winner none more so than midfield man Josh Neil who fought for every ball in every area of the pitch, but with time running out the game ended in a draw with the Mavericks looking by far the better side..

15/03/2009 1 - 3 Loss To Glasshoughton Wel
The opening round of the Invitation Cup saw the Mapplewell Mavericks Under 9`s drawn against Glasshoughton Welfare at Mapplewell Park.

Glasshoughton, third in the Charles Rice League, were always going to be a tough opposition and so it proved as they had the early play which resulted in a well struck volley narrowly going over the bar. The Mavericks knew they had their work cut out for them and responded well with hard work in defence by Matthew Barraclough, Harry Andrews and Joe Donald to keep the away side at bay.

As the first half was about to come to an end the deadlock was broken when the Glasshoughton keeper kicked the ball towards Lee Jordan, who after a great first touch, found the ball nicely positioned to launch an absolutely stunning volley over the keepers head and into the top of the goal from at least 25 yards. Surely a goal of the season contender. Straight from the resulting kick-off though Glasshoughton were on the attack and with the final kick of the first half, drew level when an optimistic punt from the Glasshoughton forward somehow found its way into the back the net after what seemed like a foul on the keeper.

The second half started with the home side seemingly still thinking about the late first half goal asit was Glasshoughton who began to exert the pressure on the Mapplewell goal. This pressure paid off for Glasshoughton as a fine individual goal put them 2-1 up in the tie. The game was secured by Glasshoughton with a third goal on the counterattack as the Mavericks pushed for an equaliser.

Everyone worked hard in the game and were unlucky not to come away with something. The defence and in particular keeper Matthew Cox played extremely well pulling off a number of great saves.

01/03/2009 0 - 0 Draw With Wrenthorpe Rangers
The Yellow team extended their unbeaten run to five games as they drew 0-0 away at Wrenthorpe Rangers.

It was always going to be a very tight and closely fought affair as both teams had drawn in their previous cup match. In a shrewd attempt to tip the balance, the tactical genius that is Ian Hinchcliffe and Anthony Lockwood switched the formation and put Harry Andrews into the centre of the defence and brought Ben Briggs in to spearhead the attack. The gamble almost immediately paid of when a loose ball fell to Ben who fired his shot just over the bar.

The Yellows then really started to pile on the pressure and came close to scoring when a Lee Jordan corner was volleyed just over by Harry Andrews. Wrenthorpe weren`t out of it though andwere always dangerous on the counter attack, but some solid defending by Harry Lockwood and Matthew Barraclough ensured keeper Matthew Cox had a relatively incident free first half.

Kieran Barraclough then came on and became the target man for several through balls from the ever industrious Josh Neil, however the score remained 0-0 at half time.

The Yellows started the second half impressively with Lee Jordan in particular causing havoc down the left wing, crossing the ball for both Ben Briggs and Kieran Barraclough to almost snatch the winner. Wrenthorpe too had their changes, but the lightening quick reactions of Matthew Cox ensured yet another clean sheet.

Final score was 0-0.

The Man of the Match award went to Harry Andrews for a commanding display in defence.

01/02/2009 1 - 1 Draw With Wrenthorpe Rangers
The madness of the cup returned this week as the Mapplewell Mavericks under 10`s welcomed the Wrenthorpe Rangers to a grey day at Royston Park.

Hoping to do the business against a tough opposition, defending cup champions The Mavericks kicked offand soon had the away side under early pressure with some wonderful work by the danger men Joe Donald and Harry Andrews. Indeed the Mavericks seemed on top of their game with the whole team passing the ball around and looking a side in command. Battling through the sun and the rain the Yellow`s put together some excellent passing moves but were unable to find the net.

Manager Anthony Lockwood, resplendent in his now traditional look of Mavericks jacket, baggy trousers and bobble hat, strode the touchline issuing orders, looking a Manager in total control. However just after 8 minutes The Rangers caused an embarrassment when they took the lead with a rare break on goal. Shaken by this the Yellow`s were asked to keep moving and they responded immediately when a great move between Lee Jordan and Harry Andrews ended with a shot just wide by Josh Neil. It was just after 12 minutes that the well deserved break came though, with Lee Jordan doing some wonderful work down the left and after taking one stepbeyond the last defender, provided an inch perfect ball for Harry Andrews to drill the ball home. Continuing the first half pressure The Mavericks were unlucky not to add to their score. Mavericks keeper Mathew Cox had little to do but when asked to perform he did so excellently, as did defenders Harry Andrews and Matthew Barraclough. Half time 1-1.

Mapplewell kicked off the second half with an early break and The Rangers had a close escape when Joe Donald slid a ball through to Josh Neil whose shot was cleared off the line. Lee Jordan saw a superb volley off a Harry Andrews cross go just wide, and a powerful drive off Harry Andrews drew a good save of the keeper. Both managers were close to cardiac arrest as the last 5 minutes was a real house o

25/01/2009 2 - 1 Win Against South Kirkby Knights
Keen as mustard to make up for last week`s draw, the Mapplewell Mavericks under 10`s Yellow team travelled to South Kirby to play The Knights in what turned out to be another mid-table battle. Indeed it was the Mavericks who came out of the blocks like scalded cats and immediately put the home team under pressure with a sublime 1-2 between Josh Neil and Harry Andrews resulting in Harry Andrews shot going narrowly wide.

Playing some of their best football of the season the yellow`s continued theirdomination of first half and it was a foray down the right ending in a throw to the Mavericks that produced their first goal. Defender Matthew Barraclough«s throw in to Josh Neil whose chipped cross found Harry Andrews who unleashed a sweet shot past thekeeper and into the onion bag. A couple of early substitutions for the home side were made in an attempt to beef up their defence but this had little effect as the Mavericks continued pressing for more goals. The recent rain resulted in the pitch startingto chop up and it was the away side who showed their mussels ploughing through as The Knights defence showed more leeks than a colander. The second goal came from a run by Joe Donald who haired off down the right only to duck inside and place a great ball to Josh Neil who, after roasting a defender, laid the ball at the feet of Harry Andrews who turned and instinctively smashed the ball with his left foot past the squash of defenders and into the top corner leaving the home keeper«s feet planted like a couple of turnips. It was indeed a peach of a shot.

The second half started in a similar vein to the first however The Knights had a rare attack with shot on goal only to be denied when keeper Matthew Cox leaped salmon-like to deny the attacker. Given renewed confidence the home side began to make more of a game of it and their work was rewarded with a goal. This made the last 5 minutes entertaining as the home side pressed for an equaliser however the Mavericks defence stood tall, showed their bean

11/01/2009 1 - 1 Draw With Glasshoughton Wel
This week the Mapplewell Mavericks Sharabang were on their travels for the return ticket leg at Glasshoughton. The previous fixture ended with The Mavericks taking all six points but today wasn't going to be all plane sailing and so there were no assumptions of steamrollering the opposition.

The game started well with good passing from both teams in what turned out to be a fairly even opening exchange. Glasshoughton had the better of the early chances when a cross was parachuted into the box andfound the head of their forward only to be thwarted by an exceptional one-handed save by Mavericks keeper Mathew Cox. Mapplewell responded when a Josh Neil shot was deflected only for the subsequent corner to run across the goal line just out of reach ofLee Jordan`s desperate lunge. As the first-half progressed Glasshoughton began to exert pressure on the Mapplewell defence with shot after shot either being saved or deflected. It was only a matter of time however before Glasshoughton registered their opening goal and this came when a series of shuttle passes resulted in a good shot from just outside of the box beat the keeper and into the top corner.

The half time team talk seemed to lift the Mapplewell players and they came out for the secondhalf with more focus and determined not to be railroaded by the home side. This pressure paid off when Harry Andrews scootered down the left to reach the penalty box to then make an unselfish pass to Josh Neil in space whose left foot shot found the net like a homing pigeon finds its coupe. This mini revival was soon over though as the home team began to build once more and it was The Mavericks who rode their luck as the swing of possession began to go the way of the home side. The Mapplewell goal was leading a charmed life as shot after shot seemed to come off the Glasshoughton conveyor belt, which included a shot which hit the bar and came down on the goal line only to be cleared and two further shots which both hit the post. The final whistle blew at 1

04/01/2009 1 - 2 Loss To Nostell Miners
A late winner by Nostell Miners broke Mavericks hearts as the home team went down 2-1 in what turned out to be a dramatic first match of 2009.

Undefeated in 3 games the Mavericks were looking to extend their unbeaten run with the visit of mid-tableNostell Miners to a cold and crisp Mapplewell Park. However it was the visitors who took the lead when a shot which was well saved by Mavericks keeper Matthew Cox, fell kindly at the feet of the Nostell forward to easily put the ball into the net. This seemed to rejuvenate The Mavericks who began to play some nice football and were unlucky not to level the scores when a Josh Neil pass opened up Lee Jordan only for his shot to hit the side netting. Further good work by Harry Andrews and James Priestley went unrewarded as the first half ended 1-0.

A good half time talking to by Manager Antony Lockwood seemed to awaken The Mavericks out of their winter slumber and the young Mavericks side came out in the second half playing some of their best football of the season to date. Excellent passing and commitment to winning the ball was abundant in every player and in a great move early on in the second half the Mavericks were unlucky not to be level when Josh Neil shot wide after great play which saw everyMavericks player touch the ball. It wasn't long before this hard work paid off though when a James Priestley pass found the feet of Harry Andrews to fire home his third goal of the season. The balance of play was now well and truly with the home side whocontinued to push for the winner. Shot after shot was either deflected or saved by the Nostell keeper with Harry Andrews and Lee Jordan both unlucky.

In the dying moments of the game though the Nostell team stole the result when a defensive errorwas capitalized on by their forward who ran through for a one on one with the Mavericks keeper. The Nostell forward kept his cool as he side-stepped the keeper to stroke the ball into the net to the dismay of the home side and their supporters.

14/12/2008 1 - 1 Draw With Alverthorpe Jnrs
Back up after a two week break the Mapplewell Mavericks played host to Alverthorpe Juniors. A late pitch inspection deemed Mapplewell Park to be unplayable therefore the buffer pitch at Royston was called into action. Key defenders Matthew Barracloughand Harry Lockwood were ruled out due to a virus and a nasty bug, so the Yellow team changed their basic format to add extra byte into their defence for what is traditionally a hard fought contest. And so it proved with both teams looking to have the better operating system but it was the Mavericks which had the best of the opening exchange with a hard drive by Harry Andrews which was extremely well saved by the Alverthorpe keeper. Mason Booth made his debut in defence for the Yellow team and his key rolewas to screen the keeper and monitor their sole forward. Midway through the first half Joshua Neil was sent clear and ran inbox but his shot was again well saved by the keeper. Towards the end of the first half the away sides defence began to tire slightly and defragment allowing Harry Andrews time to set up a long range shot which was heading for the top corner only for the Alverthorpe keeper to make the third top class save of the half. Half time ended 0-0. To get anything out of this game the Mavericks were going to have to show application and megabyte to win the battle of the midfield. Some fairly hairy tackles were flying about and a resulting free kick allowed Lee Jordan to provide the server and show what a great left boot he has to deliver aball at the feet of James Priestley to ram in his third goal in three consecutive games. This lead was only short lived though when an Alverthorpe midfielder was allowed to chip the ball into the area for their forward to hack the ball into the net. Thiswas not on the script though and the Mavericks pushed on for the win. Harry Andrews corner found Lee Jordan free to head the ball only for another good save off the keeper. This really was a game of end to end play with Alverthorpe having a good chance to

23/11/2008 1 - 0 Win Against Stanley United
A late change of venue saw the Mapplewell Mavericks Under 10`s yellow team entertain Stanley United at Mapplewell Park. Keen to build on their impressive 5-0 win of last week the yellow½s opened the game with immediate pressure upon the away goal with shots by Lee Jordan and Harry Andrews going just wide.

Midway through the first half the deadlock was broken when a through ball ended with a sprint between the Mavericks James Priestley and the keeper to see who could get to the ball first. The keeper managed to get there first but his attempted clearance was blocked by the oncoming forward with the resulting ball falling nicely for him to finish well into the unguarded net to register his first goal for the club.

As the game wore on the midfield became a quagmire of mud which made delicate passing something of a lottery and at times the centre field became more congested than spaghetti junction on a Friday night rush-hour. What was needed was resolute defending and hard work and this was provided by the defensive duo of Joe Donald and Harry Lockwood who along with Matthew Cox provided their second consecutive clean sheet.

This was an excellent advert for junior football and credit goes to both sides for a thoroughly entertaining game which at full time the Mavericks won 1-0.

16/11/2008 5 - 0 Win Against Alverthorpe Jnrs
Looking to put 3 straight losses behind then the Mavericks under 10`s Yellow team travelled to Alverthorpe in what turned out to be a fairly one-sided match.

Straight from the kick-off the Mavericks showed their intent by putting the home side ununder pressure and played some of the excellent passing football that we know they can deliver. The ground was firm underfoot and this helped the Mavericks move the ball around at will with some excellent interchange between defensive rocks of Matthew Barraclough and Harry Lockwood and the midfielder Josh Neil, who between them directed play for the forward trio of Lee Jordan, Harry Andrews and Thomas Hobson.

It wasnät long before the Mavericks opened the scoring when Josh Neil shot from the edgeof the area which fooled their keeper and ended in the corner of the net. Further pressure applied by the Mavericks saw shot after shot rain down on the home sides goal only to be denied by either some good goal keeping or good fortune on the home side`spart. It was only a matter of time however before the Yellow team increased their lead and this was done when a clever throw in by Harry Andrews split the home defence to enable Lee Jordan to bear down on goal and calmly put away his 6th of the season. The third goal saw Lee Jordan return the favour when his cross found Harry Andrews on the edge of the box who finished in style leaving the keeper with no chance. The Mavericks finished off the game towards the end of the first half when Josh Neil unleasheda long range speculative shot which found the corner of the net.

Continued pressure in the second half gave little reward to the Mavericks as the home side seemed to have re-organised their defence in the half time team talk, however they could do nothing about a Harry Andrews shot which rattled the crossbar. The game was put beyond any doubt mid way through the second half when James Priestley`s excellently placed through ball gave Lee Jordan the time to finish with the keeper stranded.

02/11/2008 2 - 3 Loss To Thornes Juniors
The first November game of the season saw wet and blustery conditions greet the U10 Yellow team and their opponents Thornes Juniors to Mapplewell Park. Playing conditions underfoot were treacherous as a previous game that day had dug up the pitch making the ground very heavy-going. This was a game for the true mud lovers..

And it was Mapplewell that seemed to suit the conditions early on as they commanded the midfield quagmire with some neat interchange to put pressure on the Thornes defence, butit was the away team that somehow broke the deadlock with a probing ball into the Mapplewell box being fortuitously touched into the corner of the goal. Spurred on by this early knock the Mapplewell team came to life with wave after wave of attack with Lee Jordan, Josh Neil and Harry Andrews all going close. This pressure finally paid off when a cross from Josh Neil found Lee Jordan in space on the edge of the Thornes box to smash in the equaliser. The first half finished with the home side well in command and unlucky not to be going into the break ahead..

Mapplewell continued this pressure in the second half and gained the lead when an excellent move ended with Joe Donald finding Harry Andrews on the edge of the box who neatly side-stepped thedefender to place the ball into the top corner of the goal. The away team did put pressure on the home defence but this was dealt with effectively by Matthew Barraclough, Harry Lockwood and Joe Donald. However they could do nothing about a speculative shot by Thornes which somehow managed to end up over the line levelling the score with only 5 minutes to go. The home side re-started the game still with their minds on the goal they had just conceded because within a minute the away team scored again to go3-2 up with only minutes to go..

26/10/2008 1 - 3 Loss To Durkar Devils
Hoping to build on their excellent result last week against the previously unbeaten Glasshoughton Welfare side, the Mavericks Under 10`s Yellow team welcomed the Durkar Devils to Mapplewell Park. Durkar, currently second in the league and having only dropped 5 points all season, were going to be tough opposition for this Mapplewell side and so it proved with a close, enthralling game. Indeed it was the visitors who settled into their stride the first with some good fluid passing and straight away the home team`s defence were being tested. However excellent defending by Harry Lockwood and Matthew Barraclough and a fine save from Matthew Cox kept the scores level. The visitors kept up their pressure and a corner on the far side nearly saw the Devils going one up with a well timed header just going over the bar. The deadlock was broken half way through the first half when an accurate Durkar cross found their forward who side-footed the ball into the corner of the net. In the dying moments of the first half the Mavericks pushed forward to try to level the scores and it was a James Priestley cross which found Lee Jordan in space who calmly placed the ball into the net for his fourth goal of the season. The second half saw continued pressure applied on the home teams goal and within two minutes of the re-start the devils could have taken the lead when a long range shot was excellently saved by Matthew Cox. The third goal of the game however, fell to Durkar after a cross was tapped in at the near post to go 2-1 up. The game was sealed when a quick Durkar throw found their forward in the box and although under pressure from the keeper, finished well to make the final score 3-1 to the visiting side. The Mavericks battled well all afternoon against a verywell organised side. Man of the match was Harry Lockwood who, although not playing in his normal role, put in 100% effort for his team.

19/10/2008 1 - 0 Win Against Glasshoughton Wel
The Under 10`s welcomed Glasshoughton Welfare to Mapplewell Park in what was to be a close run game. Glasshoughton, new to the Charles Rice Two Team League ,were unbeaten in their first 8 games and the under 10`s Yellow team knew they had to play their best to gain anything out of the game.

And so it proved in the first half with good solid defending by both sides but the first chance fell to Glasshoughton with a well taken shot being palmed over by keeper Matthew Cox. Mapplewell seemed to up their game and it wasn®t long before their opening move ended with Kieran Barraclough unlucky not to register his first goal of the season. Continued pressure by the visiting team kept the home side`s defence busy with excellent work by Matthew Barraclough,Harry Lockwood and keeper Matthew Cox. The Mapplewell side almost broke the deadlock when a hand ball resulted in a Harry Andrews free kick being cleared off the line. Half time finished at 0-0 which was a fair reflection of the work both sides put in.

Within a minute of the second half starting Mapplewell were ahead when a sweet move initiated in midfield by Harry Andrews ended with Lee Jordan slotting the ball in the near corner with a well taken right foot shot. The away side pressed for an equaliser and it was the Glasshoughton centre forward who broke through and had a shot which was heading for the top corner of the goal only for Matthew Cox to make a salmon-like leap to push the ball over the bar. At times Mapplewell rode their luck and itwas only by an impressive display by Matthew Cox in goal that kept the home side in front. Josh Neil had a good chance to put the result beyond doubt in the dying minutes of the game only for a well-timed defensive tackle resulting in the final score of 1-0 to the home side.

12/10/2008 2 - 0 Win Against Thornes Juniors
The under 10 Yellow team made the short trip up the motorway to Thornes Juniors in the hope of putting the disappointment of the last few weeks behind them and recording their first win of the season.

This fixture has traditionally been a close fought contest with both teams cancelling each other out but it was the Mapplewell side that got out of the blocks the quickest with some good early pressure on the home sides defence with shots from Harry Lockwood and Harry Andrews both going close. Despite the domination of the ball the Yellows failed to put the ball in the back of the net and it was only through a tactical change that brought Josh Neil from his regular midfield role to the forward slot that proved the turning point of the game. Within minutes a good ball from Harry Lockwood down the left saw Josh Neil cut into the box, slotting the ball in the bottom right hand corner to open the scoring.

Eager to press home their advantage the Yellows once again pushed forward and with good work by defensive stalwarts Matthew Barraclough and Joe Donald, opened up Harry Andrews on the right to release Josh Neil who finished with aplomb into the top corner of the net to make the score 2-0.

The second half saw few chances for the home sideand any foray into the Mapplewell half was quickly snubbed out by the midfield work of Lee Jordan with any rare shot on goal being comfortably dealt with by keeper Matthew Cox. Changes saw Kieran Barraclough and Matthew Ullyott coming on and it was Kieran Barraclough who nearly put the tie beyond doubt when an Harry Andrews cross saw him volley just wide.

Final score was a 2-0 win to the Yellow recording their first win of the season with Man of the Match being Harry Andrews.

05/10/2008 1 - 3 Loss To Stanley United
Mapplewell Mavericks under 10`s travelled to Stanley United in the hope of finding their first win of the season, however finding the ground was hard enough.

Both sides had to adapt to the very boggy pitch and it was Mapplewell who initially tookcontrol of the difficult conditions. With regular Harry Andrews out, James Priestley once again stepped in to help bolster the forward line, but it was from the defence that the first goal came. Matthew Barraclough skilfully sidestepped a tackle before releasing a perfectly weighted long ball to Lee Jordan who controlled and shot into the bottom corner of the net. This seemed to awaken the Stanley team who then pressed looking for the equaliser. Some good work by them ended with a fine save by Mapplewellkeeper Matthew Cox, but it was not long before they levelled the score after an ambitious shot took a nasty bounce off the undulating pitch and over the despairing keeper. The pendulum of the first half swung back to Mapplewell favour and they finished the first half comfortably on top with the Stanley keeper making a brace of fine saves to keep the half time score 1-1.

The second half saw a Lee Jordan shot well saved by the Stanley keeper after a fine run down the right. This was truly end to end stuff and it was Stanley who took a shock lead as a cross was half volleyed and brought about a tremendous save off Matthew Cox only for the ball to hit the cross bar and dribble over the line. Mapplewell had chance after chance to balance the score, the best of which was a narrow angled Josh Neil shot which hit the crossbar. With time running out Mapplewell pressed for the equaliser only to be hit by a counter attack which resulted in their third goal with a well taken goal into the top corner.

The final whistle ended with a 3-1 win to Stanley United.Man of the match was Lee Jordan.

28/09/2008 0 - 0 Draw With Kippax Welfare
The under 10`s welcomed Kippax Welfare to Mapplewell Park for the first round of the Charles Rice Invitation Cup, with both teams hoping to go one better than the 1-1 draw last week in the corresponding league fixture.

Mapplewell started the better team and settled down to some very attractive football with Josh Neil commanding the central midfield position and opening up play for Lee Jordan and Harry Andrews both wide. Consistent pressure by the home team saw save after save made by the Kippaxkeeper who singlehandedly kept their team in the game. Any rare forage forward by Kippax was quickly and effectively nullified by the strong defending of Matthew Barraclough and Joe Donald with keeper Matthew Cox only touching the ball once in the firsthalf.

The second half saw little change from the first half pressure applied by Mapplewell, and once again it was the Kippax Keeper who kept producing a string of fine saves to thwart the best efforts of the Yellow`s forwards. It seemed to be one of those days where the ball simply wouldn`t go over the line and so it proved with the final whistle blowing on this 0-0 draw.

Mapplewell can take heart from a good solid performance that on another day could have resulted in a 4 or 5 goal win. Man of the Match was Josh Neil who slotted in well to the Yellow team from his normal place in the Green team.

21/09/2008 1 - 1 Draw With Kippax Welfare
The under 10`s travelled to Kippax Welfare hoping to put the disappointment of last week`s performance behind them. Clear skies and bright sunshine welcomed the two teams and it was the Mapplewell team that quickly got into their stride forcing an earlycorner through good work by Lee Jordan and Harry Andrews.

The yellow`s maintained good pressure throughout the first half with a display of slick passing football in midfield and stout defending by Matthew Barraclough and Jo Donald, and eventually the deadlock was broken by Harry Lockwood. Lee Jordan provided a slide-rule pass for Harry Lockwood to run onto and under intense pressure off the Kippax defender Harry kept his cool and slotted the ball home into the far corner of the Kippax goal.

The second half started in much the same vein as the first half ended with Mapplewell continuing to command the centre of the park, however in a rare foray into the Mapplewell half Kippax won a corner and the resulting ball ricocheted around the boxfinally sneaking in after deflecting off keeper Matthew Cox.

Mapplewell continued to press in an effort to secure the victory however they were thwarted by the Kippax keeper as shots by Ryan Heathcote and Harry Andrews were both well saved.

The game ended one apiece but Mapplewell can take heart from a much improved performance and they were unlucky not to take the three points.

14/09/2008 1 - 5 Loss To South Kirkby Knights
The long awaited first game of the season saw the Mapplewell Mavericks Under 10`s side welcome the South Kirby Knights to Mapplewell park. The yellow team gave debuts to three of their out of season signings, with James Priestley and Kieran Barraclough making their first appearances in defence and Matthew Ullyott starting on the substitute bench. Other changes saw Thomas Hobson stand in for goalkeeper Matthew Cox who was unavailable.

The first half saw both sides struggle to settle down and it was South Kirby Knights who seemed to adapt to the uncut grass of the Mapplewell Park pitch the best which culminated in some good passing movements going unchallenged leading inevitably to the first goal. After this the yellow team began to play some neatpassing football but they couldn`t quite find the answer to unlock the stern Knights defence. Pushing forward to try to level the score only lead to gaps appearing in the Mapplewell defence, gaps which were well exploited by the South Kirby forwards and it wasn`t long before they were increasing their lead by the half time break. Only the determination of stand-in keeper Thomas Hobson and some resolute defending by Matthew Barraclough kept the score down.

The second half started much as the first half finished, but good work in midfield by Harry Andrews and Harry Lockwood produced some good passing football which opened up Lee Jordan to make one of his now familiar runs down the left. Cutting in near the goal line, what seemed to be a cross loopedover the keepers head and into the top corner of the net. This seemed to momentarily spur on the yellow team however this only seemed to be temporary as they finally went down 5-1.
